Just recently I was looking at the prophecy of Isaiah 9v6 which talks about this baby Jesus which was to be born 700 years later. There are some great descriptive words f: for Jesus: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
One which stands for me is the prince of peace. I’m sure a lot of us are asking, if God is really the prince of peace why is this peace not contagious, why did it not effect his environment in this way.
If we look at Jesus` entry to this world alone, we can see it certainly wasn’t a peaceful one. He first of all had Mary riding on a donkey, whilst ready to give birth. Mary and Joseph couldn’t find a place for the RULER of this earth to be born (even though Jesus deserved the red carpet treatment, he chose not to), he also had King Herod on his back trying to kill him, the country was in despair as King Herod was going to kill every male child 2 and under. This certainly wasn’t a time of peace, more like chaos . But he’s the prince of peace?!! This is a bit like Christmas for many people, there certainly isn’t peace in a lot of peoples environments.
Now the question is what type of peace is this, because it most definitely doesn’t mean the environment we live in. Luke 2v14 says Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to people whom his FAVOR rests. This Favor means people who have committed their life to God.
A definition of PEACE: Shalom (Hebrew): Rest, tranquillity, wholeness, completeness.
This peace is only available to people who have the favor of God, people who believe and trust in God. John 14:27 shows us that this peace is not of the world, its SUPERNATURAL.
Unfortunately most people on this earth rely on their circumstances to be good until they find what they believe to be “peace”. This isn’t really peace, this is really only RELIEF, wither it is money coming through for a mortgage, getting a new job, recovering from sickness, healing of a relationship. These are all related to circumstances. Unfortunately as humans we can’t control circumstances, does that mean we can’t have peace all the time NO! God’s peace is completely different. I LOVE the story of the disciples in the boat with Jesus, after hitting a few WAVEs they started to panic, they didn’t have peace. Jesus` words were profound “ye have little faith”. True Peace (Rest, tranquillity, wholeness, completeness) comes through trusting and putting faith in God. Not panicking as soon as you hit a few little waves.
One thing I’ve realised through my events and others, is that God will usually gives you peace DURING the storm or he will CALM it. And he usually doesn’t calm until you are at your breaking point.
I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope you dig into that PEACE that God offers no matter how big the wave!!!! God is in control…….ALWAYS.
